Why your wool topper arrives flat, and how to fluff it

Why your wool topper arrives flat, and how to fluff it

It is compressed for efficient shipping, and wool remembers its shape: fluffing it by hand is how you bring that shape back, and it is a must. Unbox it the day it arrives, hook the corner straps on, knead every quilted square and give each one a single pull apart. Fluffed properly, it reaches its full 2 inches and looks like the topper in our photos, with the same weight of wool. After that, a fluff when you change the sheets is all it needs.

Why it ships compressed

A Queen topper holds 10.5 lb of carded wool that, fluffed, stands 2 inches tall across 33 square feet. Most of that volume is air. Shipping it fluffed would mean a box the size of a dresser, so it is rolled and compressed before it leaves the workshop. Wool copes with this because the fiber is crimped, bent many times along its length like a tiny spring. Compression flattens the crimp; it does not break it. Give the fibers room and a little movement and they stand back up.

This is also why “it arrived thinner than I expected” is the most common first message we get, and why almost none of those customers end up returning it. The photos show the topper after fluffing; the box shows it before. It is the same topper with the same weight of wool, and how full it gets depends on how well it is fluffed.

Two hands kneading the quilted squares of a Woolify wool mattress topper to bring the loft back

Day one: fluff it by hand

  1. Unbox it on the bed. Unroll it and lay it out the right way round, straps at the corners of the mattress.
  2. Hook the four elastic straps under the mattress corners. This stretches the topper flat and starts taking the curl of the roll out.
  3. Knead. Work across the topper square by square, pressing and lifting the quilted pockets with both hands, the way you would knead dough. Do not skip any.
  4. Pull each square apart. Hold a pillow-top square at its top and bottom, reach into the wool fibers through the cover with a hand on each side and pull them apart. We suggest doing this to every pillow-top square; a single pull per square is enough.
  5. Check it before the sheet goes on. A square that looks lower than the rest needs more kneading; fluffed properly, every square stands at the full 2 inches.

What is normal in the first week

  • Height: the full 2 inches as soon as it is fluffed. If a square ever looks lower than the rest, knead it again; that is all it takes.
  • Wrinkles from the compression process. They fade after a month of regular use.
  • A faint wool smell for the first week. It is the smell of the fiber, not of anything added to it, and it fades on its own; a few hours by an open window speeds it up.
  • Slight unevenness between quilted squares, which evens out with use and kneading.
  • A shallow body impression where you sleep. Wool compresses under you at night and recovers during the day; that is the layer working, not wearing out.

Keeping the loft for years

  • Fluff it when you change the sheets: a minute of kneading is enough.
  • Rotate it head to foot every few months so the same spot does not carry the same weight.
  • Air it in the sun for a few hours twice a year. Sunlight and dry air refresh the fiber.
  • Use a mattress protector over the topper, under the sheet. It keeps spills off the wool, which is spot-clean only.
  • Never machine wash or tumble dry it. Heat and agitation felt wool: the fibers lock together and the loft is gone for good. If it ever needs more than a spot clean, have it professionally dry cleaned.

Questions people ask

Can I put it in the dryer with tennis balls to fluff it?

No. That trick is for down and synthetic fill. Heat and tumbling felt wool, and the loft cannot be recovered afterwards. Kneading by hand does the same job safely.

How long until it is fully expanded?

As soon as it is fluffed. Knead every quilted square and give each one a single pull apart, and it stands at its full 2 inches. How full it gets depends on how well it is fluffed, so take your time over every square.

Will it flatten where I sleep?

It compresses under you at night and recovers during the day, and a little settling in the first months is normal. The topper is 2 inches when fluffed; a flat patch that does not recover with kneading is a fault, and the trial covers it.

Do I need to fluff a wool pillow too?

A moment of kneading each morning redistributes the pearls. The pillow does not arrive compressed: it arrives full and firm, and you take pearls out to lower it.
